Starting a Practice in New Jersey

If you wish to start a practice in New Jersey, licenses, certificates, or registration are required from the following three agencies:

  1. New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners (BME), 140 East Front Street, 2nd Floor, Trenton NJ 08608, (609) 826-7100, ÿor www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/medical.htm.
  2. Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) Registration, Department of Law & Public Safety, Drug Control, PO Box 45022, Newark NJ 07101,ÿ(973)504-6545.
  3. In addition, the law requires physicians to register their medical license with the county clerk in the physician’s county of residence.

You also may wish to obtain the services of a practice management agency or a health law expert.

Members should visit the BME section of this web site for information on licensure, reporting obligations, and continuing medical education. Any physician licensed after July 1, 2003, must complete an orientation course within twenty-four (24) months of becoming licensed. The course will cover topics such as: the function of bme, statutes and regulations governing physicians, and record-keeping.

AMA Tools

JAMA Career Net is a web site that offers physicians a searchable job database. It is updated weekly.

The AMA also offers a primer entitled Starting a Medical Practice.

Medical Student Insider is the AMA’s newsletter for medical students.

Accreditation Council For Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Tools

The ACGME web site (link is above) includes an opportunity to order its data book of information onÿresidents enrolled in acgme-accredited programs arranged by state and specialty, among other things.
