How long will it take to process my medical license application?

The Board of Medical Examiners reports that on average a medical license application takes about 120 days to process, from date of receipt. Most delays in application processing are attributed to incomplete applications.

Once an application is received by the Board, it is assigned to a reviewer, who takes the application from start to finish. Within 48 hours of receipt, the reviewer will send a letter to the applicant indicating that the application was received and that the applicant should begin the background check process, as soon as possible. About 30 to 45 days after the applicant’s fingerprinting appointment, the fingerprints are sent to the State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for full background check. The Board receives daily notices regarding cleared background checks. Once cleared, the applicant will receive a letter advising of the clearance and requesting any outstanding documentation. The bulk of delays are attributed to missing third party documentation. Licenses are issued within 48 hours of application completion.

    • Submit your certification and authorization form (page 22 of the application) for a criminal history background check with the application.
    • Send transcripts early. You may send transcripts without an application. The Board keeps the records on file, until the application is received.
    • Request documentation from third parties before submission of your application.
    • Book your fingerprinting appointment as soon as you receive confirmation of receipt of your application from the Board.
    • For fingerprinting, use a location designated by the Board, rather than a local police department, as this minimizes issues with the fingerprints and processing errors.

Please see the Board’s Frequently Asked Questions on the application process for additional details.

The Board has asked MSNJ to identify any issues with the medical licensure process. If you experienced delays in obtaining your medical license, please email us details of your experience, so that we may report these issues to the Board.
