MSNJ supported the AMA in its Prior Authorization and Utilization Management Reform Principles in early 2017. As a result of publication of these principles, a workgroup comprised of the AMA, the American Hospital Association, America's Health Insurance Plans, American Pharmacists Association, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, and Medical Group Management Association was formed. The group issued a joint press release regarding their consensus statement on: encouraging the reduction of physicians subject to prior authorization; regular review and adjustments to the services and drugs requiring prior authorization; improved transparency regarding prior authorization; continuity of care protections during coverage or plan changes; and adoption of electronic standards. Read more press coverage. MSNJ applauds and supports the workgroup's efforts and collaboration in improving the prior authorization process. Read more.
At MSNJ's 2017 House of Delegates meeting, a resolution was adopted to study the problems of prior authorization in the state. At our Board of Trustees meeting on December 7, 2017 the draft report of this study was introduced. The final version, along with our ongoing efforts, will be presented at the House of Delegates meeting on Saturday, May 5, 2018. We will continue to work with the AMA, the NJ Department of Banking & Insurance and payers in the state on this important issue.
