Key Healthcare Issues in New Jersey
MSNJ Positions on Key Bills
Managed Care
With the high penetration of managed care health coverage in New Jersey, the practice of medicine is significantly influenced by the companies that provide this service, whether you participate or not. From reimbursements to pre-certifications, managed care issues impact your practice and your ability to treat your patients.
Personal Injury Protection
Personal Injury Protection – PIP insurance coverage in automobile policies supports an excellent trauma system and remains one of the last good healthcare payers. Proposals to base create a new fee schedule based on Medicare and to change the definition of “usual and customary” will have huge impacts beyond those physicians who accept PIP patients.
Medical Liability
Perhaps no issue has had as great an impact on the practice of medicine over the last several years than that of medical liability. While the State continues to study the issue, MSNJ has developed a series of options, including caps on non-economic damages, that should be considered by our policymakers.
Medicare
Flaws in existing laws have resulted in significant payment cuts for physician services and if changes aren’t made the entire system may collapse threatening care for our nation’s elderly and infirm.
Property-Liability Guaranty Association (PLIGA)
PLIGA is a state run agency that provides insurance coverage to persons when their insurance company has become insolvent and cannot meet its obligations. PLIGA, however, only pays up to $300,000 putting the insured physician at risk for personal liability above that amount.
