Medical Society Awards $18,000 to Local Medical Students

Eighteen thousand dollars in scholarships were awarded this year to three Atlantic County medical students.

Robert Kickish of Somers Point will receive a $6,000 scholarship from the medical society.  He is a second year medical student at George Washington University Medical School in Washington, DC.

Sean Wilkinson of Egg Harbor Township will receive $5,000 in scholarship money from the medical society and $1,000 from the Dr. and Mrs. Edward Wrobleski Scholarship Fund. He is a second year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Marc van de Rijn of Egg Harbor Township is beginning his first year of medical school at Temple School of Medicine in Philadelphia.  He will receive $3000 in scholarship money from the medical society and $3000 from the South Shore Health Services Scholarship Fund.

The Scholarship Fund of the Atlantic County Medical Society was established in 1970 by Dr. Maurice Gordon in memory of his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Gordon. The Medical Staffs of the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Shore Memorial Hospital and South Shore Health Services have donated scholarship money for the past several years. In 1980, Mrs. Pearl Thomas of Pleasantville died and left one third of her estate (approximately $90,000) to the Medical Society for the sole purpose of granting scholarships to local medical students who would hopefully return to this area.  A total of $561,000 has been awarded in scholarships since its conception in 1970.

A total of 87 medical students have been awarded scholarships to date with the highest individual award being $15,000.
